Poet Laureate Anthology Call for Submissions

The New Mexico Poet Laureate Program is accepting submissions for consideration to the New Mexico Poetry Anthology: Vol. 1. We invite submissions of original, unpublished poems by poets who have lived in New Mexico at least three consecutive years. The anthology will celebrate the state’s people, cultures, languages, traditions, and querencia that express the uniqueness, complexity, and wonders of New Mexico. 

Poems can interpret the following themes: 

Agriculture 
Borders – geographical/political/cultural/etc. 
Community 
Culture – multi-cultural 
Ethnopoetry Family History Identity 
Landscape
– cultural/environmental 
Language – indigenous/bilingual/colloquialisms/slang/calό/cowboy/etc. 
Music Nature People 
Querencia – sense-of-home/sense-of-place/love-of-place 
Spirituality 
Water – acequias/drought/etc. 

Broader interpretations will be considered. 

Co-edited by New Mexico Poet Laureate Levi Romero and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Emerita Michelle Otero, the anthology will be published by Museum of New Mexico Press in 2022. 

Guidelines: 

Submission Deadline: June 15, 2021. Poems will not be accepted after this date. 

Each applicant can submit up to three (3) works. There is no word limit per individual work. All individual works must be uploaded in PDF file format (1mb file size limit). Your name and contact information MUST NOT appear on the creative work you upload. 

Submitted poems must be original, unpublished works. Previously published work will not be accepted. Submissions must be withdrawn from consideration if accepted for publication elsewhere. Submissions submitted by and on behalf of current employees or family of current employees of the NM Department of Cultural Affairs will not be considered. Bilingual poems and poems in languages other than English will be accepted. If the poem is in a language other than English, please include an English-Language translation.
