1st Place: Carol Nagan, Nogal, NM

“I’ve been living in New Mexico for the past 5 years and feel inspired by the natural objects that call out to me — birds, plants, rocks, and so much more. My studio in Nogal offers me the perfect place to lose myself creating art. I’m also inspired by artists in Carrizozo, 12 miles away and a welcoming community that I have connected with.

The arts are vital to a person’s ability to appreciate the world we live in. The arts move people on an emotional level and make us better able to live a happier and fuller life.”

An arts advocacy poster by Carol Nagan. A desert scene with cactus and a roadrunner is at the bottom, with clouds and a blue sky in the middle and top. An intertwined ribbon of red and yellow rises into the sky, through the beak of a raven with colorful patterned wings. In the middle of the poster are the outlines of artistic objects: musical instruments, paintbrushes, twine, needles, and rugs.

Honorable Mention: Kathy Ramsey, Alamogordo, NM

“I am a retired hospice social worker living in Alamogordo, NM. I have realized over the years that my childhood passion for art offers a path to healing for myself. I trained professionally in therapy through play and expressive arts and have found both to be important when folks encounter difficult times. Creativity helps us access inherent strength whether in surviving or in thriving.

My art interests these days are in writing, collage, and photography. I seek to capture a mood of soul, integrity or a surprise. Playing with colors energizes me! My work can be seen at www.kairosarts.blog.

I serve on the Board of Otero Arts, an organization in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Our mission is to enrich the lives of those in Otero County through the arts and to support our artists. This is what has led me to understand the critical role of advocacy in growing a local arts economy that will strengthen us individually and collectively.”
